The history of DivX and the DivX phenomenon begins with the original release of the DivX video compression technology, developed by Jérôme Rota (aka "Gej") in September 1999.
Ursprünglich entstand der DivX-Codec als der Franzose Jerôme Rote den MEPG-4-Codec von Microsoft so modifizierte, dass er statt nur ASF-Dateien auch AVI-Dateien speichern konnte.

Die ersten Versionen von DivX (3.11) waren OpenSourceSoftware. Später wurde DivX kommerzialisiert und ist nun ein eingetragenes Warenzeichen der Firma DivX Inc.

EasyDivX
Mit dem Produkt EasyDivX http://easydivx.does.it lassen sich sehr einfach gute DivX-Kopien von DVDs herstellen. Das Team hat aber die Arbeiten eingestellt, da mittlerweile Hunderte von Podukten das DVD-Ripping gut unterstützen.
